“Those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.”
(1 Timothy 6:9-10 ESV)
Dear Friends of the Risen Saviour,
Christian greetings!
Just to be clear, you will note that St. Paul does NOT say, “Money is the root of all evils.” He does say that “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils.”
Not all evils – Not money in every case – But loving money, especially when we know that we should do as Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.” (Matthew 22:37-38 ESV) In other words, if we act like having enough money will take care of us better or instead of God, then we have made our finances into a god.
Luther said, “A ‘god’ is the term for that to which we are to look for all good and in which we are to find refuge in all need.” (Large Catechism, 1st Commandment)
Ouch! There are many things to which we look for some measure of good. As Christians, we need to examine ourselves, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to see if we are growing to expect more from various earthly things than from the Lord Himself.
Which do we love more – the gift or the Giver? For sure, we should love and trust the Lord more than any of His gifts.
Of course, in our sinful condition, we often fall off that wagon. Then, as always, we need assistance. And there is only One who can provide it. Jesus! – “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds we are healed.” (1 Peter 2:24 ESV)
Having said all that, as forgiven and redeemed people of God, we can earn and use money to His glory – to take care of ourselves and our families, to support the work of the Lord in His Church, to serve others in our community, and to enjoy as we give glory to God for all His blessings.
The Lord be with you!
