“Thank the Lord and sing His praise; tell ev’ryone what He has done.
Let all who seek the Lord rejoice and proudly bear His name.
He recalls His promises and leads His people forth in joy
with shouts of thanksgiving. Alleluia, alleluia.”
(Post Communion Liturgy)
Dear Friends,
Christian greetings!
“Thank the Lord” – We sing it immediately after receiving the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday of the month. It is a peppy, joyous song. As with much of our liturgy, I worry that we get lulled into singing it out of routine. But just read and focus on the words!
This weekend is Thanksgiving and these words say a lot.
“Proudly bear His name.” Maybe that’s what we ought to be – proud. You bear the name of the risen Lord Jesus. His name was placed upon you. You are labeled as His own through your baptism when He claimed you. Be proud of that. The name that you bear gives life and salvation. Being a Christian is nothing of which to be ashamed. So seek the Lord, rejoice in Him and proudly bear Jesus’ name.
If you are not ashamed, then thanksgiving is easy. Don’t be ashamed to thank the Lord for your food before you eat in a restaurant. Give thanks. Don’t be afraid to say grace when non-church-going family and friends come to your house for dinner. Proudly thank the Lord who provided it.
“He recalls His promises and leads His people forth in joy with shouts of thanksgiving.” The Lord has done the hardest work – creating all you see and have, redeeming you from sin, preparing a place for you in heaven. Let Him lead you, His people, forth in joy with shouts of thanksgiving. Not quiet, bashful gratitude, but with divinely given pride in our God as we sing praise to Him.
See you Sunday, Lord willing. Let’s read and sing with open-throated joy.
The Lord be with you!
