“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”
(1 Peter 2:9-10 ESV)
Dear Friends,
Greetings in Jesus’ name.
I have a lot of books. There are a select few that I treasure more than the rest. One is called Homiletics. It’s a book about preaching. It is much richer than my description suggests. The author, Dr. Michael Reu, starts out by describing the essence of the church. Let me share…
The Church is the congregation of true believers in Christ. Faith, though primarily an inner attitude of the heart, cannot remain hidden in the heart, but must express itself outwardly in word and action. This is true of the faith of the congregation no less than of that of the individual. The faith of the congregation expresses itself in a common confession, in common praise and thanksgiving for the wonderful works of God, in hymns and prayers, in a … celebrating all (the) Lord means for the congregation, in mutual edification upon the basis of the one faith, in short, in a common worship or service. Without such common worship the congregation of believers, or the Church, cannot long exist.
