“God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.”
(Psalm 46:1 ESV)
Dear Friends,
Greetings in the name of Jesus!
During Luther’s lifetime, massive stone walls were a regular part of towns and other large structures. Considering that Brother Martin was cooped up in the Wartburg Castle for six months for his own protection from the authorities, such would be a natural image coming to mind when Luther later translated Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
The meaning is clear – God is like a fortress to me – like a mighty castle. I can trust God to keep me safe. He is strong and mighty, and He has a loving interest in keeping me safe.
Psalm 46 indeed was the inspiration for “A Mighty Fortress” the famous Reformation hymn:
A mighty Fortress is our God,
A trusty Shield and Weapon;
He helps us free from every need
That hath us now o’ertaken.
The old evil Foe
Now means deadly woe;
Deep guile and great might
Are his dread arms in fight;
On Earth is not his equal.
With might of ours can naught be done,
Soon were our loss effected;
But for us fights the Valiant One,
Whom God Himself elected.
Ask ye, Who is this?
Jesus Christ it is.
Of Sabaoth Lord,
And there’s none other God;
He holds the field forever.
