“You are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.”
(Ephesians 2:19-21 ESV)
Dear Christian Friends,
Greetings in the name of Jesus!
The Church is built on “the foundation of the apostles and prophets.” That quote is another way of saying “the Bible.” Just think about it – The New Testament is the witness of the apostles chosen by Jesus and the Old Testament was written by the Prophets chosen by God to speak to His ancient people of Israel. Hence “apostles and prophets.”
Now what the words of God through His “apostles and prophets” are able to do is of utmost importance. The Bible not only provides information but it actually accomplishes what it proclaims. For us that Word of God is the foundation of who we are as the Church.
The activity of humans around the church is easily seen. We build buildings, fill up calendars with activities, set budgets and try to meet them. We interact with people seeking to get them to believe and worship with us. But these are the result of what God first did. If we forsake the foundation and lose God’s truth, then all human effort in the church will prove futile. That is especially true if we lose Jesus, the rock of our salvation.
Let us forever build “on the foundation of the apostles and prophets!”
The Lord be with you!
