“Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
(Psalm 23:4 ESV)
Dear Friends of the Risen Saviour,
Easter greetings!
“What? A guy with a big stick sounds scary to me!” True, unless you are a lowly sheep and there are hungry wolves around. Then having that guy who knows you, gave you a name, and who seeks you out when you get lost, and now, who fends off your enemies with a big stick sounds rather comforting. Instead of prohibiting restful sleep at night, he makes it possible.
That is how it is with you and me and Jesus. He said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” Incredible as it seems, Jesus’ big stick is His holy, perfect life and His innocent suffering & death, capped off with His powerful resurrection. This shepherd is also “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29 ESV) And thereby we have forgiveness of sins and eternal life through faith in His name. Yes, Jesus’ big stick is His laying down of His life and taking it up again. He said, “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again.” (John 10:17-18 ESV)
As sinner Saul, now turned apostle wrote, “It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? … Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? … I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come … will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:33-35,38-39 ESV)
Jesus is the Good Shepherd. His death and resurrection, they comfort me.
The Lord be with you!
