“For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? … Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children.” (Deuteronomy 4:7,9 ESV)
Dear Christian Friends,
A week from this coming Sunday we begin a new season of Sunday School, Bible studies and confirmation. On that day, September 9, we will also pray over our beginning of the Through-The-Bible reading programme. If you read the verses above and think about our work together at Prince of Peace, I think, “What more is there to say?” Let us go to the Lord’s house to hear His Word. Let us ponder what God says – together, alone, and with our families! Then we shall pray,
Almighty God, Your Word is cast Like seed into the ground;
Now let the dew of heav’n descend And righteous fruits abound.So when the precious seed is sown, Life-giving grace bestow
That all whose souls the truth receive Its saving pow’r may know. (LSB 577, verses 1, 4)
This Sunday, September 2, will be last Sunday of the summer worship schedule at 10:00am.
The Fall Schedule begins September 9:
9:00 a.m. Sunday School & Adult Bible Class
10:30 a.m. Worship
Preaching this fall will be based on themes selected from the Through-the-Bible readings for the week to come. They will be sermons on topics/stories about which you don’t usually hear. It all begins September 9.
Seniors Lunch & Laughs! This is a call to our senior members (and friends) of PoP. Bring a dish to share for lunch on Monday, September 10th at noon. Pastor will bring some jokes. People of Haiti following Tropical Storm Isaac . . .
We thank God that the damage caused by high winds and drenching rains was not terribly severe in very vulnerable Haiti, with the exception of much damage in the capital, Port-au-Prince. Thankfully, most of the congregations of the Lutheran Church of Haiti were spared, except for two of them in the Port-au-Prince area of La Saline which were flooded, as reported by President Revenel Benoit:
“Most of our church members’ houses were flooded, and now they are all living in water and mud. There is no place nearby to go to, because the whole area is very poor and the government does not care for them. We have 450 members in these two churches. But, in Gonaives everything is fine. There were only rains and winds. And the other places where we have our Lutheran churches have reported no damage. Not much information about hurricanes are being given in Haiti. That’s why we have so many victims each time we have a hurricane. Thanks! God bless you! Yours in Christ, Rev. Benoit”
The Haiti Lutheran Mission Society has wired to the Lutheran Church of Haiti CDN $5,185.00, of which $2,185 is designated for tropical storm relief and medical supplies, and $3,000 for salaries for lay pastors and school teachers, which the LCH had just recently requested due to a shortfall in their income this summer.
The HLMS greatly appreciates from congregations of LCC, prayers of thanks and of blessings for our Lutheran brothers and sisters in Haiti who are suffering from the storm’s damage, that they may quickly receive aid and be protected from the diseases that easily follow flooding and contaminated water.”
Kindest Regards, R.G.(Ron) Wills, HLMS, Director/Communications
