“And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.”
(Acts 1: 24-26 ESV)
Dear Christian Friends,
The first reading you will hear this Sunday is about the replacement of Judas as apostle. He needed to be replaced because Jesus chose 12 initially. They were to be eyewitnesses of Jesus’ teaching and miracle ministry, but even more so, eyewitnesses to Jesus’ death and resurrection from the dead. Judas’ tragic suicide prevented him from being an eyewitness of this most glorious event.
But what draws my attention is the way that the new apostle # 12 was to be chosen – by prayer and a casting of lots.
Imagine calling a pastor that way! At a call meeting people pour over a list of candidates, pray and vote. It sounds pretty heady, but I have attended enough call meetings to know that it is a lot more random than we like to think.
But Prince of Peace has a pastor. You called me to that responsibility 3 years ago. However, what about other decisions in your life? We like to think that we are so smart – well educated, scientific, and rational. Yeah, right! How often does it come out that in spite of our best efforts and calculations that it still seems like it’s all a matter of chance.
Well, it is not chance. It is all in the Lord’s hands. And so, like the early church, we should talk it over, pray and then just give it our best shot. We do so trusting the Lord will guide and bless according to His good purposes and His unending love toward us. That is true no matter how it seems to be playing out at the moment.
May the Lord bless your life and our life in Christ together.
