“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come?
My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.”
(Psalm 121:1–2 ESV)
Dear Christian Friends,
Greetings in the name of Jesus!
What was the psalm writer thinking when he wrote, “I lift up my eyes to the hills”? Was he looking for the hills themselves to provide something? I don’t think so. However, it has been suggested that “the psalmist may be looking up to the hills of Jerusalem as he approaches for one of the festivals.” (The Lutheran Study Bible, page 972)
That would make sense. We don’t worship mountains. Those glorious peaks do not help us. Neither do we go into nature and find the answers to life through meditation to become one with the universe (which is a central philosophy of Eastern religious thought).
No, we look to the revelation of God – God as He has revealed Himself to us in His holy Word, the Bible; and even more particularly, through the coming of His Son, Jesus Christ. “Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.” (John 1:17–18 ESV)
At the conclusion of John’s Gospel, he writes, “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:30–31 ESV)
As we approach our church building on Sundays, we should consider where our help comes from. “My help comes from the LORD” who made all that there is and who also came into this world through His Son to be our Saviour.
God’s peace to you in Christ Jesus, our Lord!
