“We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers;
the snare is broken, and we have escaped!
Our help is in the name of the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.”
(Psalm 124:7-8 ESV)
Dear Christian Friends,
Greetings in the name of Jesus!
“Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.” It is a verse we quote during Divine Service, Setting 4 in our hymnal. We say it just before confessing our sins and receiving forgiveness from God.
The previous verse speaks of escape and snares. There is a good chance that King David, the author, had in mind invading kings and people close who could betray him. He was dealing with real people who were out to harm him. Of course, you have no such enemies. Do you? Then again, maybe you do. Let me list a few enemies as presented in the Bible:
- An unbelieving world with its temptations is a spiritual threat: “For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.” (1 John 2:16)
- Our sin is not a friend. Instead sin binds us. “I am of the flesh, sold under sin.” (Romans 7:14)
- You probably already rightly thought of the devil as an enemy. “Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)
-
- Those in Hospice careFinally, death is our enemy. It is not just a part of life, like some say, but it is the ultimate penalty for sin and an enemy of all. “The last enemy to be destroyed is death.” (1 Corinthians 15:26)
No wonder the Bible considers Jesus Christ our hero. Which of these enemies has He not fought for us and defeated? “Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57) Or, as an old friend of mine used to say, “Yay God!”Let us confess the Psalm verses above as true for us. Indeed, “Our help is in the name of the LORD.”God’s peace to you in Christ Jesus, our Lord!
